Justin Timberlake is not only a successful musical artist, but also the first individual to build an LEED certified golf course in the United States. This course, named Mirimichi Golf Course, is the only U.S project to receive the Audubon International’s Classic Sanctuary certification. Unlike the conventional courses, this specific institution will feature irrigation systems to maximize the use of rainwater, native landscaping, and electric golf carts powered by solar panels in order to reduce… Continue

Climate Change: Preying on the World’s Most Vulnerable

On July 23, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing to examine the challenges of curbing climate change in developing nations. It is well-understood that the effects of climate change can be devastating, increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, more droughts in newer areas or areas that are already water-stressed, destruction of wildlife habitats (especially in the ocean), among other issues. But while developed countries, as the largest consumers and emitters, are at t… Continue

The Chief Administrative Officer’s staff has, over the past eighteen months, been taking steps to make the Capitol building and its surrounding congressional office buildings more energy-efficient and environment friendly. The “Green the Capitol” program has and continues to effectively research the Capitol’s environmental impact to find out how the institution, as a whole, can become more environmentally responsible. To enumerate a few of the many successes of the “Green the Capitol” program,… Continue

The Ecological Footprint

Have you ever wondered how much of an impact you, as an individual, have on the planet? Maybe you have, maybe you haven’t. Either way, it’s something interesting to think about, especially now with environmentalism on the rise. One way to do this is to calculate your Ecological Footprint. The Ecological Footprint highlights the reality of ecological scarcity, which can be disconcerting and frightening information. The existence of global overshoot suggests that human society will need to make s… Continue

Innovative Fog Catchers

In rural Peru, villagers have to pay for the water they use to cook, clean and drink. Trucks drive up steep hills to bring water to villages in isolated regions, forcing residents to pay as much as ten times for water as communities downhill, which are connected to municipal water supplies. But a new product to catch fog is giving them access to water for free. For a few thousand dollars and some volunteer labor, a community can set up fog-collecting nets that can gather hundreds of gallons of… Continue

Serving Our Country... At Home

The recent growth spurt of green-collar jobs has not only attracted environmentalists, but it has also gained the attention of veterans. Renewable energy and other environmentally-friendly industries have something in common with the armed forces – they aim to protect. There is an expected 20 million renewable energy jobs to be produced by the year 2030. With nonprofit organizations such as Veterans Green Jobs (www.veteransgreenjobs.org), veterans are being trained to fill these positions. The… Continue

Building Farms in the Sky

In 40 years, our planet will need to support over three billion people, which begs the question, how can we make sure that there is enough food for all of us? Dickson Despommier, a Columbia University professor of public health, has come up with an innovative idea – turning high-rise buildings into farms. This technique, known as vertical farming, has the potential to make food more accessible for billions of people while reducing carbon emissions that come from shipping crops across continents… Continue

Hungry for Change?

The grocery store can be a scary place. When you walk in, you are faced with an estimated 48,000 items that have traveled an average 1500 miles to reach the supermarket shelves. After you get over the plethora of choices, you are then faced with refined sugars, saturated and trans-fats, hormones, pesticides, and additives. Where exactly does our food come from? What is it doing to our health? And what is it doing to the environment? These are some loaded questions. People such as authors Eric… Continue

A Hopeful Future – California’s New Automotive Emission Policy

The green future of the United States looks more promising with the Obama administration’s recent approval of California’s long-overdue request to enforce stern regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles. The Environmental Protection Agency announced that by 2016, all vehicles sold in California have to improve their fuel efficiency and reach an average of 35.5 miles per gallon. The production of more fuel-efficient automobiles will significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxid… Continue

It is the first legislation to set limits on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, paving the way for a greener future. The bill was passed after hard pushes from Nancy Pelosi and President Obama, as well as a heated debate in the House. Algae Turns Carbon Dioxide Into Ethanol Fuel

Dow Chemical and Algenol Biofuels announced on Monday that they are going to build a demonstration plant that, if successful, will use algae to convert carbon dioxide into ethanol, which would be used for vehicle fuel. The potential for a new profitable venture are not lost on these two companies. The ethanol produced by this process will be sold as fuel and plastics in order to replace natural gas and thus reduce global emissions. Also, this process produces oxygen, which could potentially be… Continue

Week in Review: The Climate Bill

This week’s environmental headlines have been dominated by the climate bill. And with just cause. The United States has not taken responsibility for its energy use and the subsequent pollution that resulted from years without legitimate controls. Now, with the effects of global warming becoming more obvious with each passing day, it appears that some progress is possible. This is not to say that the ACES Act (a.k.a. The Waxman-Markey Bill) will single-handedly ‘green’ the nation, but it is a ste… Continue
