The Decline of Neatness: The State of Global Condictions

If cleanliness is next to Godliness, then the society that we live in is on a path straight to hell. In “The Decline of Neatness” by Dr. Norman Cousins, keen issues were analyzed thoroughly and dissected. The essay was written nearly 20 years ago in 1990; however, all of the issues are visibly coherent in today’s society. Cousins argued that the way we dress is inter-connected with the way we speak, act, and react as human beings. Conformity and lack of uniqueness has made Cousins label us the “unkempt generation” (Cousins 78).
Society is sick with sloppiness and it is spreading everywhere that you go. The new, hip things are tight clothing, holes and bleach stains. The closer you look like a homeless person, the cooler or more comfortable you are. Old Navy, The Gap, and Levi are just some of the manufactures that have cashed in on this swarming catastrophe of fashion. In the third paragraph, Cousins pointed out that we try our hardest to be different and look disheveled, when really we look like we all rolled out of the same bed and did absolutely nothing to ourselves. We are like uniformed hobos with high priced jeans that strayed away from grooming. While observing riders on the city’s rail system, one will noticed a common theme. The females wore clothing that was too small and left little to the imagination. The clothing had standards, it had to show off the mindless art work that was tattooed on her breast of all her ex lovers and the names of all seven of her children. Also there was a sign telling anyone who dared to look what zodiac sign was right above her rear end.
A decline of neatness is eminent and on the rise. Visual rendering among society of this decline is plastered on every reality television show for today’s youth to imitate, like sloppiness is the law of the land. Cousins remarked that “Disheveled is fashion; neatness is obsolete” (78). Right along with our untidy look is our “slovenly speech” as Cousins wrote in the fourth paragraph. One of our city’s major attractions is the movie theater at Gallery Place and Chinatown. It is infamous for teens who visit there daily by the hundreds. If you are one of the rare few who is offended by foul and profane language then wearing headphones is a necessity while in Gallery Place. The vulgarity of the language is just half the battle. The major problem is their lack of vocabulary which causes use of shrewd language as a substitute for real words of expression.
Cousins explains that we as humans have become desensitized to human hurt and give credence to mindless violence and mandatory casual sex. Cousins also elucidates that we do not realize this is a problem. We should be very uncomfortable with the way that things are, but one can guess we all must have very high tolerance levels. While observing one will notice the lack of respect that we as humans have for one another. Maybe neatness injection is the anti-virus for the sloppiness disease. Never should ironing clothes, pulling our pants over our bottoms, and wearing clothing that is our size be neglected. Finishing our sentences completely without assuming that the person whom we are conversing with knows what we are saying is equally important.
We also see the decline in neatness in our inability to use alternative energy vehicles. We spent countless hours stuck in traffic going to a job that we hate, to pay for a house that is way too expensive anyway right?
The logical thing would be to get a vehicle that helps not only us but the earth. When gas prices are so high that we have to take on a part time job just to pay for the gas that it takes to get to our first job then something is definitely wrong. With an SUV like an Escalade, Durango, or Hummer you may be able to fit five or six of your neighbors in it, but it will take about 100 dollars in gas to make it off your block. The pollution escaping out of the exhaust of your cool Tonka Truck is taking a few years off of your life expectancy. However now there is a solution for this havoc and that is hybrid vehicles. The the dying breed has found a cure for our havoc, hybrid vehicles, along with a tax incentive to make it worth our while.

My collection of photos, speak volumes on my view on saving the earth. There is not much we can do to stop the sky from falling down on us, but at least we breathe fresh air before that tragedy happens. The collection that I have chosen illustrates possibilities. We have the possibility to live on an earth that is beautiful, refreshing, and above all safe.

Help the Earth, Help Us

We live in a very visual world. Everything that is popular these days is blasted all over the World Wide Web, which is the greatest thing since God said "let there be light". So to oblige in the ways of society I have three videos on this site that will help one visualize the world in which we are a part of. Are we participating in destroying or saving our planet.
In video one, the Lexus manufacturer has showed us all how to save the earth with style. The video itself is only 30 seconds long however, so much is shown in that time frame. Lexus shows us the problems of the world like oil pollution, trash dumping and littering, and also natural disasters like hurricanes. Then they show us the solutions. For example, in the clip they show a group of people picking up the trash and recycling of the remains. The video showed wind energy mills, which is the energy of the future. Finally the video showed a hybrid car, driving off into the sunset which is symbolic for a better tomorrow or future.
In video two, Honda shows a video clip that is all about harmony. Harmony amongst people, and the earth that we reside upon. In the beginning, everything is split into two, like the two engines in a hybrid vehicle. The number two represents life, since you need both man and woman to create it. This video elucidates to the fact that if you and everyone else drives a hybrid car then we would have a much cleaner, greener, harmonist earth.
Finally in video three, a collage of pictures, tell a thousand words and form into a beautiful video. Some of the pictures in the video are not pretty but they show exactly where we as humans are going wrong. There is a picture of water pollution that is greener that basil peso, pouring out into a river. This is a source where we get our drinking water from. There is a picture of a factor with pollution as thick as buildings forming into mind boggling clouds above a city where a young boy or girl is inhaling that pollution as they run in the park. We live in a society where a person is literally three feet from a trash can and decide to empty the contents of their purse onto the sidewalk. The question was posed, “are we that lazy”? One can only be so sad to say that yes we are. Delete Comment

Imagine BY Tiara Rich
Imagine Global warming wiping us off the face of the earth or rather drowning us in the sorrows of our own ways.
Imagine the insides of our bodies blacker than the pollution coming out of the back of our SUV's.
Imagine garbage men kicking in our front doors with our trash because there’s no more room in the world for it.
Imagine a third eye, a second nose, a new head growing from the radiation we've texted, blogged, and created with our modern technology.
Imagine total darkness because we've used up or rather wasted all the energy the world had to offer.
what can we do to help ourselves, nothing it's too late.....
OR IS IT ?

The Earth and Me BY Tiara Rich
My attitude was simple, I didn't care about much,
the earth is dying- no it's not, that's just the government trying to fool us.
You see I walked past and laughed at those trying to recruit me,
into going GREEN, recycling, and drastic things like hugging trees.
I lived on planet www.I Don't Care.org,
the things you're concerned about doesn't concern me.
I didn't know just how wrong I could be,
without me my world stops, without trees I can't breathe.
I won't force myself to believe that I have no future, no legacy-just dust,
no one would even know I was here because everyone is gone just as I am.

Profile Information

About Me:
I am a psychology major at the University of the District of Columbia. I would like to see if the behavior of humans can be modified to save the earth, eventually saving ourselves. The question of "WHY" we as humans are destroying the earth, should become "HOW" can we change our lives and save our planet. I like most of the people that I know, was only concerned about me for so many years. However I have recently discovered that without other people and without the earth there is no ME. ( the ME as I know me anyway) I am an interdepedent human being that has a responsibility to do everything in my power and call on the Higher power to help save this country, this earth, this planet.
I have one other question, Will you join me?
I have a new quest in life. I want to do everything that I can to save LIFE. Little things like driving a Hybrid car to conserve energy. Recycling so that I can preserve the EARTH not trash it. Finally, I plan on lobbying against companies or industries that try and use the land that is preserved for endangered species.
