I run a web site called Consumer Change which provides grassroots action to help businesses improve their environmental practices. Our website provides an easy-to-use directory for feedback to US-based businesses. We’ve collected contact information for many hotels, restaurants, shops, banks and car rental agencies so you don’t have to do the legwork. You can submit feedback immediately about your experiences and view comments from other consumers as well as responses from businesses.

We believe that collective action in a public forum will be a greater stimulus for companies to change their environmental practices.

Enough Already In The Land of Plenty

According to Use Less Stuff, Americans generate an extra 6 million tons of waste in the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yikes! Even though I love this season, (the music, the smell of cinnamon, lots of free samples, everything bundled up looking so pretty in ribbon) I cringe at its excesses.

Getting Beyond the Bed Bath And Beyond Coupon

Taken from www.ConsumerChange.com Blog

Last week I wrote about the importance of advocacy, so I feel a little ashamed today to write about where, so far, my advocacy has failed.

I have been trying to get Bed Bath and Beyond to change their coupon mailing policy. Their postcard coupons are 5.5” by 11” – about six times bigger than typical coupons in a newspaper or magazine. They do not state the amount of post consumer recycled content… Continue

The Importance of Advocacy

Taken from the Consumer Change Blog

Last weekend I attended a brunch given by Conexions, a Bay Area non-profit whose mission is to advance regenerative social, ecological, and business practices that enable Earth to thrive. The Mayor of Palo Alto, Peter Drekmeier, was the host. I have long admired Palo Alto city’s environmental policies. Their Palo Alto Green program allows residents to use power from 100% renewable so… Continue

Noah's Bagels: Tackling Climate Change The Second Time Around?

Taken from my Blog at www.consumerchange.com

If the biblical story is to be believed, Noah and his family saved the human race and all the animal species from extinction during the Great Flood. Maybe that is why Noah’s Bagels is not taking climate change so seriously the second time around?

During a lunchtime visit to Noah’s Bagels last week, I was surprised firstly when the person taking the order wrote down the order on a 2 sheet order form; then h… Continue

Taken from my Blog on www.consumerchange.com. I could not get the links to work on this posting so I suggest you read the actual Blog at www.consumerchange.com/blogs/view_blogs

The third in the series of Consumer Eco-grievances focuses on Coffee Shops. It is very fitting as 16% of the reviews on Consumer Change are for coffee shops. This Blog not only considers the reviews we have received s… Continue

All of the things we do, we can still do more to save the environment. Next time we fly we use on our own mugs! Its very good - bigger than the polysterine ones and reusable. More coffee less waste!

Hi Marlene:
Enjoyed your post - recently we stayed in a Tokyo Business Hotel (hovel) booked for us by a good friend wanting to do to the right thing - the place was advertised as an 'Eco Hotel'.
The only thing ECO about it was the fact that everything, the room, the fridge, the bath, the windows, which we could not see out of, because the next building was so close, was so small and all concrete and plastic. Now I think of it maybe the ECO actually represents ECONOMIC FOR THE HOTEL?
A lot of businesses are getting on the 'green wagon' making claims, but not being true. To be environmental we don't need to sleep in concrete boxes, we need to build out of sustainable materials, use sustainable energies, reduce waste, and utilise the healing energy of nature (like trees outside and plants inside) to ensue a good nights rest for weary enviornmentalists to make great presentations the next day.
Good luck.
