About Me:
Founded by the organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970, Earth Day Network (EDN) promotes environmental citizenship and year round progressive action worldwide.

Earth Day Network is a driving force steering environmental awareness around the world. Through Earth Day Network, activists connect, interact, and have an impact on their communities, and create positive change in local, national, and global policies. EDN's international network reaches over 17,000 organizations in 174 countries, while the domestic program engages 5,000 groups and over 25,000 educators coordinating millions of community development and environmental protection activities throughout the year. Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a half billion people participate in our campaigns every year.

Our mission is to grow and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable planet. We pursue our mission through education, politics, events, and consumer activism.

Hybrid American Chestnuts Become Solution to Climate Change

Climate change is a pressing issue that has been impacting the United States for a long time. Everyday, environmentalists are finding new solutions and strategies in order to win the fight against global warming and the rapid growth in climate change through extensive research and studies.

Recently, Douglass Jacobs, associate professor of forestry and natural resources at Purdue University, conducted a study resulting in a new and “truly green” solution to the issue of climate change. Professor… Continue

Climate Bill Passes House, Moves to the Senate

In a historic vote, The American Clean Energy and Security Act, also known as the Waxman-Markey Bill and ACES, has been passed in the House of Representatives. It is the first legislation to set limits on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, paving the way for a greener future.

The bill was passed after hard pushes from Nancy Pelosi and President Obama, as well as a heated debate in the House.

The ACES Act caps the amount of carbon emissions from major US sources, including electric comp… Continue

Algae Turns Carbon Dioxide Into Ethanol Fuel

Dow Chemical and Algenol Biofuels announced on Monday that they are going to build a demonstration plant that, if successful, will use algae to convert carbon dioxide into ethanol, which would be used for vehicle fuel. The potential for a new profitable venture are not lost on these two companies. The ethanol produced by this process will be sold as fuel and plastics in order to replace natural gas and thus reduce global emissions.

Also, this process produces oxygen, which could potentially be… Continue

Week in Review: The Climate Bill

This week’s environmental headlines have been dominated by the climate bill. And with just cause. The United States has not taken responsibility for its energy use and the subsequent pollution that resulted from years without legitimate controls. Now, with the effects of global warming becoming more obvious with each passing day, it appears that some progress is possible. This is not to say that the ACES Act (a.k.a. The Waxman-Markey Bill) will single-handedly ‘green’ the nation, but it is a ste… Continue

The theme for the International Day on Biological Diversity (IDB) in 2009 is invasive alien species (IAS) - one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, and to the ecological and economic well-being of society and the planet.

Designation of IDB 2009 on the theme of invasive alien species provides Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and those dealing with IAS, opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and increase practical action to tackle the problem.
What are Invasive Alien Species?
Invasive alien species are plants, animals, pathogens and other organisms that are non-native to an ecosystem, and which may cause economic or environmental harm or adversely affect human health. In particular, they impact adversely upon biodiversity, including decline or elimination of native species - through competition, predation, or transmission of pathogens - and the disruption of local ecosystems and ecosystem functions.

Invasive alien species, introduced and/or spread outside their natural habitats, have affected native biodiversity in almost every ecosystem type on earth and are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. Since the 17th century, invasive alien species have contributed to nearly 40% of all animal extinctions for which the cause is known (CBD, 2006).

The problem continues to grow at great socio-economic, health and ecological cost around the world. Invasive alien species exacerbate poverty and threaten development through their impact on agriculture, forestry, fisheries and natural systems, which are an important basis of peoples’ livelihoods in developing countries. This damage is aggravated by climate change, pollution, habitat loss and human-induced disturbance.
Causes and impacts of invasive alien species
Globalization has resulted in greater trade, transport, travel and tourism, all of which can facilitate the introduction and spread of species that are not native to an area. If a new habitat is similar enough to a species’ native habitat, it may survive and reproduce. For a species to become invasive, it must successfully out-compete native organisms for food and habitat, spread through its new environment, increase its population and harm ecosystems in its introduced range.

Most countries are grappling with complex and costly invasive species problems. For example, the annual environmental losses caused by introduced pests in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, India and Brazil have been calculated at over US$ 100 billion (CBD, 2006). Addressing the problem of invasive alien species is urgent because the threat is growing daily, and the economic and environmental impacts are severe.

Earth Day Network/EDN, Hello, I'm happy to be part of this network as I believe it's one of the really important Networks to work within. I would like to learn more about the EDN. Is there an area here that talks about the history and who the creators of EDN are? I know you have the other website www.earthday.net which has more information, so there may be no reason to duplicate information here.

I think what would be more useful is to know which individuals in EDN have taken responsibility for organizing the community here and moderating it? Is there one person who IS EDN here? Or are there a couple or a few people who take turns posting as EDN? If so, shouldn't they each have their own ID here or DO THEY already? I've been in many Ning groups, but I've never been in one where the founder of the group was not identifiable as a real person. I think it would be to your great advantage to identify yourself as a human being, so we all can relate to you better and get to know you personally. Is there any good reason not to do that? I think it's also helpful to identify who the administrators and/or moderators of the group are. Maybe you could poll the membership on this issue if you're not sure. One reason to identify people specifically is so that there are people identified who are assuming responsibility for the community and who can be approached with ideas, problems, or issues. I look forward to your response on this.

Hi EDN,

I'm new to EDN and I'm trying to network with as many members as possible as I'm in the process of launching a company whose focus is to hand craft historic and tradional homes and developments using reclaimed and natural material. In addition, our goal is have each home independent of tradtional energy sources, i.e. home heating oil etc. I'm trying to obtain funding so that a prototype can be built. You can see some photos of our conepts on my profile page. I'd love to chat further with you to go over our concepts in greater detail and perhaps get your thoughts.

Best regards,

John
