I heard that plankton have a good impact on helping the ozone layer and there are scientists out at sea to increase the number of plankton to help reduce CO2 gasses which will over time shrink the hole in the ozone layer.

Phytoplankton is the primary level of the marine ecosystem. Zooplankton is as well a part of the plankton group but not a vegetal, it is part of the animalia kingdom.

Phytoplankton however can be used as biofuel. The yield of phyto is said to be 30 times higher than palm oil or switchgrass, it is easy and fast to produce... But this concept as been in R&D since the 80's... Royal Dutch Shell is presently working on this in Hawaii, Boeing, Chevron among others are as well interested in this concept.

This is great!

How can plankton under the sea mend the hole in the ozone layer? They're a good long way from the stratosphere!

Since global warming is the result of contra-natural processes (mostly of human-origin such as the chemical-industry/heavy-industry/carbo-engines etc.) which destabilize the entire global NATURAL balance, the only answer is not inducing artificial unnatural substances in natures elements (this only aggravates the problem or start new ones…extreme measures always do), but introduce and indeed increase the volume and mass of natural plankton. But although plankton (in its original state) is a natural self sustaining and rapid growing one-more-cell sea-organisms, an extreme amount of it will cause a baby boom amongst plankton-eating sea life like many whales. This is a joyful side-effect but the downside is very disturbing: the increased volume of carbon dioxide which the plankton absorbs will cause serious illnesses amongst those species eating it.

Kind regards,

Hi
Global warming is inevitable.Human activities are the main cause of the global warming. We could reduce the carbon dioxide but cannot repair the dammage, cannot stop the increase of global warming.

Biologists discovered long ago that the increased ultraviolet radiation due to ozone decline adversely impacts on ocean plankton, coral reefs and ocean food chains in general. The natural growth of freshwater and ocean algae, as well as larva and small animals an molluscs that live on it is going down. The increased ultraviolet radiation has caused failures in re seeding Canadian green forests and monumentally decreases in seeding natural growth rate. It is a fact that as the ultraviolet radiation levels increase the plankton levels decline significantly.

But surely the ozone layer is/was depleted by CFCs not CO2?
See the US Environmental Protection Agency's page on ozone chemistry: http://www.epa.gov/ozone/index.html

It may be worth checking into which Marine accessories have a negative/postive impact on plankton. If this is true, choosing the right marine equipment may be key.

Is it true that plankton have also been used in dental procedures to make the solution that is used. I will have to check with my Dental plan to see if this is the case. Anyway, very interesting and I hope that this is true. It is nice to see a good use of something that is not used that much.
